Related primarily to James's story "The Lesson of the Master," which was published in the Universal Review in the issues of 16 July and 15 August 1888. James requests several extensions of deadlines, noting in one letter that it is difficult for him "to tell rather a complicated story in a small compass." Upon delivering the concluding installment of the story, he ascribes its "apparent bulk" to his "thick paper and sprawling hand." Assuring Quilter that he has made "heroic sacrifices to cut," he requests more pages than agreed upon. In a later letter, he denies Quilter permission to reprint the story in an anthology, explaining that his interests, "literary and commercial," dictate that he publish his stories only in his own anthologies.
